FELLOWSHIP TRAINING

Dr. Nicolay completed his fellowship training in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York. HSS is located in the Upper East Side of Manhattan and was founded in 1863, making it one of the oldest orthopedic hospitals in the United States. HSS is consistently ranked the #1 hospital for orthopedics by the U.S. News & World Report and was ranked the #1 specialized orthopedic hospital in the world by Newsweek in 2022.

Additional Training in Advanced Shoulder Arthroplasty

After completing his fellowship training in New York, Dr. Nicolay traveled to Switzerland and France to complete a 6-week traveling fellowship in advanced shoulder replacement techniques. While in Switzerland, he worked with Dr. Markus Scheibel, chief of shoulder and elbow surgery at the Schulthess Klinik in Zürich. The Schulthess Klinik was ranked #6 in the world and #2 in Europe by Newsweek for specialized orthopedic hospitals in 2022. While in France, Dr. Nicolay worked in Paris at the Clinique Victor Hugo and Saint-Grégoire at the l'Institut Locomoteur de l'Ouest with Dr. Philippe Collin, the 2022-2023 president of the European Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and the Elbow.

During his time training at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Dr. Nicolay served as a fellow team physician for the New York Rangers and New York Liberty. He also trained directly with the team physicians for the New York Giants, Nets, Knicks, Mets and Red Bulls as well as Team USA Basketball and Swimming.

During his 5-year orthopedic surgery residency at Northwestern, he worked closely with the Chicago Blackhawks, volunteered as a physician for the Chicago Marathon and he trained under past and present head team physicians for the Chicago Bears, Bulls and Cubs.

In addition to his experience with professional team coverage, Dr. Nicolay has worked with the athletes of Northwestern University, where he collaborated with the athletic department to study risk factors for injury in collegiate athletes. At the high school and youth sport level, Dr. Nicolay has worked with Chicago Public Schools and the New York Public Schools Athletic League to provide preseason physicals and football game coverage for their athletes.

ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY RESIDENCY

Dr. Nicolay completed his orthopedic surgery residency training at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and also spent dedicated time in pediatric training at Anne and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and trauma training at John H. Stroger Cook County Hospital of Chicago. He was elected to serve as a Chief Resident at the completion of his 5-year residency training and was awarded the Brian Hartigan, M.D. Memorial Award, the annual award for the resident who demonstrated compassionate care, clinical excellence and dedication to teaching.
